Congratulations to DPS member Thelma Burrus who has had her entry chosen as part of the Capturing the East Riding Competition.
Her entry picturing the miniature steam engines in Driffield will now be hung in Beverley Art Gallery and will later go on tour around East Yorkshire as part of the exhibition.

December YPU winner

Ernie Howard has once again won the Yorkshire Photographic Union monthly competition with his photograph 'Kilham Morning'.

This makes two wins in two months and is great recognition for Ernie and puts DPS on the Yorkshire Photographic Map.

Well done Ernie.

Barrie Shepherdson

On Monday the 2nd January DPS Treasurer Barrie Shepherdson passed away after suffering a heart attack.
Barrie was a much loved member of the club, never shy to speak his mind and full of good humour. His passing will leave a big hole in the heart of DPS. He was a good photographer and always competed well, he is the current holder of the Projects trophy.

R.I.P. Barrie we will all miss you.

The funeral will be held on Thursday 12 Jan at 11am Octon Crematorium. Family flowers only. Donations to British Heart Foundation or Multiple Sclerosis.

What a great month for the Driffield Photographic Society,
We started by winning the new interclub match against York CC. In a tightly fought contest, Driffield were in the lead by 1 point after the prints round but we clinched it in the DPI round. York had some stunning images on offer in both rounds, and the evening was great fun with lots of friendly rivalry between the clubs.
DPS retained the Brigg Trophy at f.Ocus in Bridlington. We won by 1 point from f.Ocus with Dick (Tawny Owl Strike) and Malcolm (Bullfinch) getting maximum 20s and Chris Whitehouse (Thunderbirds) getting a 19.

Tony McLean has a picture on the Autumn Watch website of best pictures for November.

Ernie Howard won the YPU web photo (above) for October and Josie Latus and Ernie both have been shortlisted for the December competition.

Mrs Boyes returns to Driffield

This years Mrs Boyes trophy was held at New Earswick on Thursday 3rd November.
Driffield were once again crowned the winners.

Individually Barrie got a 20 in the prints for his Gannets at Bempton Cliffs (the only 20 of the night). Dick and Roy got 19s for their Tawny Owl and Tornado respectively (3 19s were given out on the night) whilst David Ireland got the highest score for a slide at 18 for his Chamonix.

All in all it was a good evening with a buffet afterwards, there were about 12 members from Malton there and the three of us from Driffield.

Pocklington Show

Dick Roberts and George Flintoft both took photographic awards at the annual Pocklington Chrysanthemum Show.

George won the open section whilst Dick took the Farmers cup for the best overall photographic exhibit.

Congratulations to Both Dick and George, great to see DPS members triumphing around the county.

2011 Projects Trophy

The first competition of the 2011/2012 season was the Projects trophy. This is a competition for pictures taken on our three summer evening outings.
The Judge was Ken Peck from Filey.
1st Place went to Barrie Shepherdson with his print called "Come in number 29 your time is up"
2nd place was Ernie Howard with his DPI "Shadow"
and 3rd Was David Ireland

Jackson/2000

The Jackson/2000 trophy is for the best 3 prints.
Entries can be either Monochrome or colour (or a mixture of both).
There does not need to be a theme or relationship to the prints.
The Judge will look at each print individually and will not know which 3 form the set.
The entrant with the highest overall score for 3 prints will be the winner.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the talk on October 3rd will no longer be David and Carol Ireland as advertised. This will hopefully happen early next year.
Instead Richard Hampshire, the warden from Tophill Low is stepping in to talk about the reserve which is fast becoming a vast asset to our clubs photography.

Where Eagles Dare

Last Monday (12th September) our Chairman Dick Roberts, kicked off the new season with a talk titled "Owl's: Real or Stuffed".
Dick has spent the last few years perfecting the art of capturing Owls using a clever system of baiting and trigger based photography.
Following his presentation the society was treated to a surprise talk from the York Birds of prey centre.
After having a barn owl swoop over the heads of the members, we had an informative and entertaining close up view of a Peregrine Falcon, Tawny Owl, Kestrel and Golden Eagle. A couple of lucky members even had chance to handle these magnificent birds.

The new schedule for the 2011/12 season is ready for you to download. The schedule is however subject to changes as a few judges/lecturers are yet to confirm.
We have the usual mix of competitions, guest speakers and club nights with some really interesting topics to inspire and instruct you to improve your photography.

Remember we start back on September the 5th with a welcome from your new Chairman Dick Roberts. This will be an informal evening with a chance to welcome any new members and chat about what we did over the summer. If you wish to bring some pictures to show the group then please do.

Dick is back in the hot seat again on the 12th Sept to host his Chairmans evening, where he will show us his owl photography. We will also need your project trophy entries in.

19th September Howard Speight is coming to talk about High Dynamic Range (HDR) pictures, then on the 26th September Ken Peck from Scarborough Photographic society is coming to judge your project trophy pictures.

DPS treasure hunt

The Treasure Hunt will take place this SUNDAY 24th July.

It will start as usual from CROSS HILL CAR PARK 2.00pm and finish at Paws - a - While (near Kilnwick Percy just outside Pocklington) for a cocktail sausage roll and whatever you bring to drink. (indoors if wet)

Could you let me (Dick) know asap if you will attend and how many, so Clare knows how many slices the sausage roll will have to be cut into.

Project Trophy 2011

The three summer evenings out that form the project trophy are:
6th June - Pocklington - meet at Paws a While after
4th July - Beverley - meet at Lairgate Hotel after
1st August - Hornsea - meet at the Victoria after

Photographs should be taken on the evening from 6pm until dark.

The Project trophy will be split into 3 sections, you can only enter one DPI from each evening, The overall winner will be the best DPI from all 3 evenings so you need to come every night to increase your chances.

For the second year running one of Tony's pictures has appeared on BBC Springwatch unsprung, this time it was with this wonderful picture of a mute swan taking off at Tophill Low.

DPS Holds 1st Gallery Exhibition

Members of the Driffield Photographic Society have put together the first Gallery exhibition in the clubs history at the Triton Gallery Sledmere.
10 members have each taken a wall to display their best work and offer the prints for sale.
The standard of the prints on display is outstanding, and really shows off the abilities of the club as a whole.
Prints were priced between £16 to £195 and several sales were made.
Ernie Howard has organised a fantastic event and we have already booked the gallery again for next year.
